Employees spend a lot of time in the workplace and therefore ultimately need to be happy at work.
When happier at work it is said, employees tend to be happier in the other aspects of their lives too.
Therefore, the last week of September has been declared the International Week of Happiness at Work.
This was founded on 28th June 2012 by the United Nations General Assembly.
What is the Main focus
Happiness at work should be the easiest thing. In reality this is not always the case. Some employees are left feeling overworked, not appreciated and not liking their jobs.
Happiness at work week was created to enable employers to focus on employee wellbeing and happiness at work, to ensure employees are happy, after all…….
Happy employees = more productive, loyal, innovative and cooperative employees
Employers need their employees to be happy at work to avoid them taking unnecessary sick days or experiencing burn out which leads them to taking time off sick.
The Happiness at work week website says:
“Happiness at work is about meaningful work, healthy relationships, development and having fun. It’s about stopping unnecessary rules, powerplay, complicated processes and procedures, absenteeism, unmotivated colleagues, and terrible managers”
How to celebrate happiness in the workplace week in your workplace
- Briefings with employees to communicate the event and to raise happiness awareness
- Encourage employees to talk about what makes them happy
- Make a positive announcement to the workforce, for example allow employees to leave work early or similar
- Hold a raffle where employees receive ‘Happy prizes’
- Put on a lunch or snacks for employees
- Free drinks from the vending machine for the week
