HIGHWAY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT (HTM) Project
Freed up Management Time! Saved Money in HR! Improved Recruitment and Onboarding.
Background
By engaging with Clover HR Highway Traffic Management (HTM) achieved the following;
- Ability to confidently take action when employees breach company policies and procedures;
- Freeing up management time from HR actions;
- Support, training and development to managers to ensure they have the confidence to take HR actions;
- A reduction in wasted time due to streamlined processes and the new HR system;
- Creating the new role of HR admin to address and support ER issues; and
- Improved recruitment processes and onboarding.
Established in 1995, Highway Traffic Management (HTM), is one of the most reliable and experienced temporary traffic management companies in the country. HTM have 131 employees, with a diverse workforce and mixture of office employees and road operatives and drivers.
Following the implementation of some initiatives in the business around employee’s mental health and wellbeing HTM wanted to support both the business and employees to ensure the workforce were engaged and happy.
There was minimal up to date HR process and procedures in place, leaving the business exposed.
HTM are passionate about their employees wellbeing and engaged with Clover HR in January 2019 to review and implement the foundations of people management to support the business moving forward.
Business Challenges:
- No clear focus or expertise in HR;
- Outdated contracts of employment;
- No employee handbook;
- Multiple outdated HR procedures in place;
- Employees unclear on how the business supported them;
- HR system which did not support the business and paper system still required; and
- Numerous managers promoted internally, no management training provided, all on the job.
The Solution
After completing a HR health check, which looks at all aspects of employment and compliance within UK employment law, Clover HR reviewed the contracts of employment to ensure they were fit for business purpose and also complied with the latest legislation. A revised contract of employment has been implemented for HTM, which supports the business operations and also their employees. In addition, to compliment the contract of employment Clover HR have implemented an employee handbook and also completed a full review and update of HR policies and procedures.
Having updated HR policies and procedures, HTM were keen to clamp down on any breaches of Company policies, particularly any breaches in health and safety to support all employees’ wellbeing and for employees to understand the consequences of not following Company rules. Where multiple incidences of the same nature were occurring HTM, along with Clover HR, engaged with the employees to clarify their understanding of processes and procedures.
Weekly calls between management and Clover HR were introduced to talk through any employee relations issues within the business, as HTM were unaware of the amount of people issues within the business. Having the call weekly allowed HTM and Clover HR to act quickly to get matters resolved.
Due to expansion HTM have recruited numerous employees’ into the business over the past 6 months. Clover HR has supported both the recruitment process to find and select candidates and the onboarding process, including inductions and probation reviews. Expansion has also meant a number of employees have been promoted internally into management roles. Clover HR has produced and will deliver a management training programme to up-skill the management team allowing them to support all employees across the business and also fulfil their roles.
Clover HR introduced and supported HTM in implementing a new HR system (Breathe HR), which enabled HTM to centralise people management, keeping an accurate log and tracing progress of all employees. This included complete management of holiday, as previously this was a paper exercise. HTM decided to roll out different sections of the HR system at different stages in line with business needs, this has allowed for a smooth role out and employees embracing the new system.
Clover HR have supported HTM to streamline their HR function and support their continued business growth, and will continue to work with HTM who are passionate about their employees and their wellbeing.
